Jefferson Avenue students take charge of safety through Raiders on Patrol program
The halls of Jefferson Avenue Elementary are safer and more mindful thanks to an initiative called the Raiders on Patrol. Distinguishable by their yellow vests and badges, the fifth-grade student leaders on this safety team encourage others to be aware of their surroundings and contribute to a positive learning environment during the busiest times of the school day.
These young mentors, identified by staff members, work under the guidance of School Guardian Karen Vargo and Physical Education Teacher Miranda Dunn. To get oriented to the program, students complete an application, receive training and shadow peers during their shifts. Students then receive their schedules and post assignments in locations like the school hallways, cafeteria and bus loop.
Raiders on Patrol assist teachers with carrying supplies, help their peers navigate the building and provide friendly reminders about The Raider Way behaviors of respect, responsibility and safety. If the patrol team members observe any issues, they bring their concerns to the attention of staff members.
The JA Raiders on Patrol program is in its second year, modeled after similar programs at Brooks Hill and Northside elementary schools.
“So it actually grew last year,” Vargo said. “When we started it, it only had like 20 kids. Then, this year we blossomed to 35 or 36, and I have a feeling that next year it'll be even bigger.”
The program offers opportunities for growth, with students being promoted from lieutenant to command officer based on their commitment to The Raider Way behaviors. This progression not only recognizes their dedication but also provides them with increasing levels of responsibility. The program culminates in an award ceremony at the end of the school year.
“There's kids that really exhibit some amazing leadership qualities, and they're great role models,” Vargo said.
The student leaders genuinely enjoy their part in this special assignment, reporting a strong sense of belonging and purpose through their involvement. The Raiders on Patrol Safety Team is proving to be a success, fostering a culture of safety and leadership at JA.
