Prescription Drug Crisis

Prescription Drugs and the Opioid Epidemic

Monroe County is facing an opioid crisis. The use of heroin has skyrocketed in the city and in the suburbs. Here are some facts you need to know:

  • The use and abuse of prescribed pain management medications leads to opioid dependency and heroin abuse.
  • Heroin overdose leads to death.
  • Students abuse painkillers (Percodan, Endodan, Roxiprin, Percocet, Endocet, Roxicet, Vicodin, OxyContin, Hydrocodone). Students also abuse anti-anxiety medications (Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan, Valium).

If your medical provider prescribes this type of medication, use only as prescribed. If your student has this type of medication prescribed to them, an adult needs to be in possession of the medication at all times. Young people often start on pain management medication due to sports injuries. If your healthcare provider recommends medication for pain, ask lots of questions.

When you no longer need the medication, properly dispose of it immediately. The Fairport Village Police department has a drop-off site open during business hours.
