What is a School Social Worker?
School Social Workers work collaboratively with the counseling department, administrators, teachers and other staff to assist students in maximizing their potential and strengths as well as overcoming challenges.
What do School Social Workers do?
School Social Workers assist students:
- Thru individual and group counseling
- Cope in times of crisis
- Access mental health services and/or health care
- Improve school attendance and performance
- Assist in development of problem-solving skills
- Improve interpersonal relationships
- Improve self-esteem and self-control
- Assist students with improving overall functioning
School Social Workers assist parents:
- Participate effectively in their child’s education
- Access school and community resources
- Strengthen parenting skills
- During times of crisis
- Understand and meet their child’s social and emotional needs
- Problem solve challenging student educational and/or developmental issues
School Social Workers assist schools:
- Work effectively with parents
- Identify students in crisis
- Understand familial, cultural, economic and health factors with affect student’s success
- Promote a safe environment
