FCSD Board of Education passes resolution to shift school day start and end times K-12
The Fairport Central School District and the Board of Education are dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all Fairport students. To that effect, the Fairport Board of Education has resolved to change the beginning and end times of school days for grades kindergarten through 12. This shift is to better align with research about both the importance of sleep for adolescents and improved outcomes at school that correlate with later arrival times for older students.
Superintendent of Schools Brett Provenzano: “The District’s top priority has always been clear: ‘How can we best serve the needs of our students?’ The Board of Education’s resolution to shift school start and end times to better align with science is a natural step in this direction and coincides with the District’s commitment to the wellbeing of our students.”
This shift in school start times has been a goal of many iterations of the Fairport Board of Education. Shifting middle and high school start times until later in the morning and moving elementary school start times to earlier in the morning will have an impact on students, families and staff at each Fairport school. The Fairport Central School District administration is committed to developing a District-wide, cohesive plan to facilitate the shift in school start times, including continuing discussions with families, students and other stakeholders.
The 2026-2027 shift will coincide with the consolidation of the 9th grade class, now housed at the Minerva DeLand School, into a 9-12 Fairport High School.
