Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars Breaks Record for Scholarship Funds
On May 30th, 2024, Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars will award the Fairport High School Class of 2024 a total of $90,550 in college scholarships! Congratulations to our 80 senior student recipients that will be awarded 98 scholarships (18 students will receive two scholarships). For 35 years, Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars (DFS), a not-for-profit organization funded by direct donations and fundraising efforts, has grown to become a substantial source of scholarships for graduating Fairport students.
The online scholarship application process begins in December and concludes in February. Students are asked to write an essay for each scholarship for which they are eligible. The essays are then read by the Scholarship Selection Committee. Scholarship offerings are available for students in two main categories: memorial and chapter scholarships. Memorial scholarships are annual awards given in memory of a loved one or beloved community member.
“We invite our donors to participate in our process by allowing them, if they so choose, to read applicant essays and provide input on who they feel best meets their criteria. We also invite our donors to attend the annual Awards Ceremony, and call them up on stage to personally hand their recipient the award certificate,” said Heather McCarthy, Chapter President of Fairport-Perinton Dollars for Scholars.
“The students at FHS are absolutely brilliant souls, who have received a tremendous education and who are so enthused to enter their next chapter. They have heartfelt stories to tell, unique and important points of view, and the skills to articulate them,” said McCarthy.
“Their intelligence and confidence is extremely impressive and reassures me we are in good hands with their hearts leading the way. This says so much about the environment in which they are being fostered.”
Chapter scholarships ($1,000 each) are provided by the DFS board’s annual fundraising efforts, such as mailings, a phone-a-thon with FHS students and the basketball halftime announcement program.
